Dr. Susan Amat is the co-founder and Executive Director of The Launch Pad at Toppel, the entrepreneur and innovator resource center at the University of Miami. Dr. Amat ventured into the music business as a concert promoter at age 15. A serial entrepreneur, she started and ran a successful record label, developing a television show that aired on the E! Network and the first CD-Rom magazine, and was a consultant to media outlets, record labels, and retail stores on marketing and strategy issues. Dr. Amat then moved on to the health care sector, creating products focusing on health monitoring and preventing childhood obesity.
Dr. Amat has consulted extensively on brand development and management, strategic planning, and marketing in industries including high-tech, retail, health care, and non-profits. She currently serves as a lecturer in the Departments of Management and Marketing at the School of Business Administration, teaching courses in strategy, entrepreneurship, organizational behavior and has created courses including Leading for Innovation and Marketing for Entrepreneurs. Her extracurricular activities include being a founding board member of the Coral Gables Museum, author of the “Entrepreneurship Tools” column in the Business Monday section of the Miami Herald, and serves on several committees, including serving as Chair of StartUp Florida (StartupAmerica Partnership), One Community, One Goal (Beacon Council), and the Technology Advisory Council (Downtown Development Authority). In 2011, Dr. Amat was selected as one of the “Top 25 Most Influential Business Women in South Florida” and “40 Under 40” by the South Florida Business Journal, “20 Under 40” by the Miami Herald, and Women In Technology International's (WITI) honored her with both the Women to Watch award and the Carolyn Leighton Women's Leadership Award.
In 2012, Dr. Amat was recognized at the White House as a Champion of Change for her work mentoring entrepreneurs and was admitted to the 31st class of Leadership Florida and was selected as a Leadership Fellow of the International Women's Forum. She received her MBA from the University of Miami with highest honors, specializing in Marketing, Management, and Computer Information Systems and earned her Ph.D. from the University of Miami in Strategic Entrepreneurship with coursework in industrial engineering, education, management, and communication.
