GEW 2016 Helps Pave the Way for GEN Sri Lanka
During Global Entrepreneurship Week this past November, Suresh De Mel from Young Entrepreneur Sri Lanka, and a member of the Global Entrepreneurship Week host organization in the country, is taking the lead in establishing a Global Entrepreneurship Network country affiliate in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka has a nascent ecosystem for entrepreneurs, where both funding and mentorship for entrepreneurs is lacking – though progress has been made in terms of ease of doing business. De Mel has taken on the task of bringing together all the stakeholders in Sri Lanka to establish a healthy ecosystem for entrepreneurs, which the country needs. De Mel, a social entrepreneur, wears many different hats in the local ecosystem – from investor and mentor, to agricultural and environmental engineer. His passion is to help young people become entrepreneurs.
GEW Sri Lanka 2016 became a catalyst, as stakeholders gathered at Nugegoda Business Hub of the Entrepreneur Hubs network, to discuss the establishment of GEN Sri Lanka. The Entrepreneur Hubs Sri Lanka, a GEW and GEN Sri Lanka partner, fills an important gap in the ecosystem, as entrepreneurs in Sri Lanka often struggle to find affordable work places where they can connect and network with fellow entrepreneurs.
The Entrepreneur Hub Community aims to encourage and contribute to a collaborative co-working environment, by connecting the dots in an emerging community of local startups through utilizing its network of hubs in Colpetty, Nugegoda and Mount Lavinia – with many more strategically located hubs in the pipeline. Daily Financial Times Sri Lanka supported the GEW and GEN Sri Lanka efforts by communicating the message to the wider community as the print media partner.
